Dancers from 17 countries will showcase traditional styles
and cultures during the Mazurdance dance school's International
Festival of Dance at noon Sunday, Aug. 6, at the Buffalo Grove
Community Arts Center, 225 McHenry Road.
About 20 international dancers will come to Buffalo Grove to
teach audience members about the history of their dance style
and culture.
"This show will feature American, classical and modern
dances, and you'll learn how the dance started in America,"
dancer Gennady Mesh said.
Countries that will be represented include: Austria, Belarus,
Canada, Germany, Greece, India, Israel, Italy, Lithuania,
Mexico, Moldova, Russia, Romania, United Arab Emirates,
Turkmenistan, Ukraine and the U.S.
The event was organized by Mazurdance Director Roman Mazur.
He is a decorated dancer from Ukraine who taught many of the
dancers who will participate in the show.
"It's a pride event, and it's not very often that something
like this is put on," Mesh said.
A slideshow during performances will explain the history of
each dance style.
"For Americans who have never been exposed to certain
cultures, they'll learn something," Mesh explained. "Those that
know the dances and culture ... they get to go back to their
roots."
Tickets for the event cost $20, with a 30-percent discount
for senior citizens.
On Saturday, Aug. 5, Mazurdance dancers will perform
traditional Jewish dances. The show begins at noon at Stevenson
High School. Tickets range from $15 to $25.
Tickets for both shows can be purchased at the Mazurdance
school, 1341 W. Dundee Road, Buffalo Grove, or website,
mazurdance.org.
